Abstract Increasing soil organic matter (SOM) stocks is recognised as a crucial element in addressing the challenges of global change and achieving the UN sustainability goals. The aim of this thesis is to provide a regional perspective on SOM in agricultural systems. This is accomplished by quantifying significant agricultural matter fluxes and conducting spatially distributed simulations of soil carbon and nitrogen dynamics at regional scales. For the case study region of Saxony, the thesis evaluated the impact of climate and best management practices on SOM stocks and developed methods to operationalise SOM modelling for policy support. It has been demonstrated that a sound management of the world's largest terrestrial carbon reservoir requires integrated approaches that consider a multitude of drivers operating at diverse scales.
