Abstract Biomass is a multi-functional material and among other things, biomass and biogenic CO2 play an important role in carbon dioxid removal (CDR). Currently, bio-based CDR options are a political issue: on the one hand, they are seen as strategically important technologies with high potentials to contribute to the reduction and avoidance of greenhouse gases, on the other, options such as bioenergy with carbon capture and storage (BECCS) are controversial. Our research as part of the BioNET project takes place within this tense atmosphere of contrary assumptions. The aim of the BioNET project is to provide a comprehensive knowledge base for and assessment of bio-based CDR options in Germany, combining novel social science research with state-of-the-art biomass competition modelling and trade-off analysis to substantially support policy makers in their actions for sustainable implementation of bio-based CDR options. Our analysis is interdisciplinary and represents a comprehensive contribution to research, as the results from the German context can be transferred to other regions.
