Abstract Implicitly the notion of surprise can be rendered one of the core areas of sociological studies via the notion of the unexpected side effects of goal oriented activities. Some streams of ecology have developed the idea of surprise to describe unexpected findings about the natural environment or experimental results that are not immediately explainable within existing theory. This was done based on the assumption that surprises often lie beyond the spheres of probability and risk. A surprising event thus needs to be understood as an occurrence that triggers awareness of one’s own ignorance. Understood in this way, successful ecological projects are based on handling these surprises by strategically taking nonknowledge into account.
