Abstract |
Radon remediation
of buildings in areas affected by mining poses a unique challenge. Due to the
natural density-driven flow regime in underground mine workings and aboveground
heaps, radon containing air with activity concentrations up to 150,000 Bq/m3,
can enter into buildings above ground. On the other hand, this radon-enriched
air can leave mine galleries and heap base, exposing buildings below to radon
activity concentrations up to 1,700 Bq/m3. On uncovered heaps, cold
air flow occurs at night, intensifying the effect of outflowing air from the
heaps on residential buildings below. Developing radon remediation strategies
in mining areas, it is important to recognize that mine workings and heaps
frequently built a connected unit. Moreover, former heaps may be difficult to
recognise since they are frequently levelled and built over. For a
comprehensive radon remediation of buildings in radon precautionary areas,
ventilation systems with zone control and heat recovery have been expanded to
incorporate the key parameter of radon activity concentration. Therefore, a
new, compact, wireless radon sensor with high accuracy based on a Lucas cell
was developed and integrated into the ventilation control system. Within the
examples presented here, additional measures were necessary to complement the
ventilation-based radon remediation, due to the presence of radon-rich air from
nearby heaps. While in one building the ventilation system was upgraded with an
additional radon sensor placed on the balcony which allowed enabling automatic
ventilation turn-off when outdoor radon levels exceeded indoor levels. Inside
the other building, however, additional sealing measures were necessary to
isolate the basement from the heap to prevent radon entry. |
