Abstract Soil structure is the spatial arrangement of particles, pores and organic components of soil. It influences many processes in soil and is at the same time shaped by them. Soil structural properties are therefore important indicators for soil functions. This chapter explains the links between soil structure and soil functions, describes important drivers of soil structure dynamics, provides an overview of methods to characterize soil structure at different spatial scales and discusses implications for modelling.
