Abstract | In the long term, a sustainable economy can only be built on renewable resources. A sustainable economy must therefore be a bioeconomy in terms of its resource base. The UN Sustainable Development Goals highlight the close connection between the bioeconomy and sustainability in various respects. However, large-scale biomass cultivation can have negative impacts on the environment and food security, which need to be taken into account in order not to jeopardise the achievement of the Sustainable Development Goals. Different governmental and civil society actors need to work together to ensure that the transformation of our current fossil-based economy to a sustainable bioeconomy is successful. |
