Abstract In order to make statements about the bioeconomy and to use them as a basis for decision-making, monitoring is needed on the basis of which reliable, transparent, supra-individual and data-based statements can be generated. In times of digitalisation, the collection, processing and use of information is becoming increasingly powerful. Thus, the formulation of targeted questions and the organisation of information into indicators that specifically and comprehensively reflect the questions are crucial: Why should something be measured? How and what should be measured? What statements should be made on the basis of these measurements? These core questions are particularly challenging for the bioeconomy, not only because it has many facets, but also because there are currently only vague objectives as to what the bioeconomy should achieve. The different interest groups also vary in their issues and priorities. While monitoring systems are partially available for the sub-sectors of the bioeconomy, monitoring concepts for the overall bioeconomy system in Germany and Europe are still being developed and tested. The first pilot reports were released in 2020/2021.
