Abstract Cyanobacteria are considered to be promising host organisms to perform whole-cell biotransformations and for the sustainable production of value-added compounds. However, for their commercial applications, scalable photobioreactors that allow high cell density cultivation, stable and long-term catalytic performance, and high product formation are necessary. Cyanobacterial biofilms in capillary reactors present a promising alternative to overcome some of these challenges.
