Abstract | This chapter aims to sketch the field of transnational environmental governance. It provides a broad typology and a corresponding diagram of existing and emerging transnational governance phenomena, which are then explored in greater detail. The piece emphasizes that transnational governance mechanisms can best be understood when considered from the perspective of more traditional and formal modes of government and law in which they are embedded and from which they have developed varying degrees of independence. |
