Abstract The analysis of engineered nanomaterials in manufacturing industries or experimental laboratories (i.e. “pristine” nanomaterials) is rather straightforward because they have been synthesized under controlled conditions, and there is ample information available about the nanomaterials and the components surrounding them. However, when these materials are released in the natural environment, they are diluted and mixed with a multitude of natural matter. This increases complexity in sample collection and handling of critical steps in the analysis of environmental samples. Due to the presence of complex matrix components in the samples, samples must be prepared accordingly before analysis to make nanomaterials accessible to the analytical method. In this chapter, we explain commonly applied sample preparation techniques including filtration, centrifugation, particle size fractionation, and chemical clean up. The selection of the sample preparation technique is largely dependent on the type of nanomaterial and the type of matrix present in the sample. Therefore, we applied of the sample preparation techniques to: nanomaterials in fresh water, in high salinity water, and in organic‐rich and particle‐rich water.
