Abstract Bioenergy is a limited resource. To limit the global temperature increase to well below 2° as specified by the Paris Agreement, bioenergy provision needsto serve energy demand and climate mitigationin an efficient way. As bioenergy systems are already established, transformation strategies will be necessary. Bioenergy in German is mainly used in small scale application for heat and power provision. The potential transformation pathways from the current bioenergy systemtowards flexible CHP-provision and the generation of advanced transport fuels are assessed with regard to the different dimensions of sustainability. Political decision makers need to reconcile many aspects in a sustainable bioenergy strategy: Technology readiness, energy system integration, economic effects, environmental risks, acceptance and GHG-abatement potentials are but a few of the important aspects. For a long term bioenergy strategy systemic understanding of the functioning and role of the bioenergy system is necessary.Integrating bioenergy into the overall energy system with a high share of renewables and into BECCS concepts are important determinants. In this work, conclusions from a systematic assessment of different bioenergy options are presented and important switching points for the design oflong termstrategies are identified.
