Abstract

Using a model we explore how extinction risk of populations in a stochastic environment may depend on body size. We distinguish between environmental fluctuations {weak perturbations) and catastrophes {strong perturbations). Body size is assumed to be correlated to the growth rate and to its variance. Our results show that populations of large-bodied species are more prone to go extinct under the influence of catastrophes, whereas populations of small-bodied species are more vulnerable under the influence of environmental fluctuations. Therefore, very small and very large species should have larger minimum viable population sizes than intermediate species. The consequences of our results for the interspecific distributions of body sizes and the relationships bet· ween body size versus population density and geographical range are discussed.
