Abstract This paper deals with the changing role of green spaces and the impacts of greening in regrowing cities. It looks at the role of green space in the context of new growth for residential neighbourhoods and discusses what can be learned from this for the general debate on the interaction between greening and urban regeneration. It brings together different strands of the scientific debate dealing with the interplay of ecological and social processes in cities. Using the city of Leipzig as an example, the paper argues, among others, that the problem is not the greening itself but the conditions of an increasingly contested housing market and related residential change. What looks like a social-ecological conflict on the surface, is at its heart an economic or distributional problem.
