Abstract Half of the drinking water consumed in Europe originates from groundwater resources and about one-third from surface waters. EU directives and national legislation should ensure that drinking water is safe and clean, and that drinking water resources will be protected sustainably against anthropogenic forces resulting from extraction, pollution, or inadequate drinking water infrastructures.
