Abstract Dimethylphenols (DMPs) are among the main toxic constituents of coal-coke industry effluents and
wastewater. They have been found in water and soil, in concentrations above the legally allowed limit for
their release into the environment. Moreover, DMPs are considered harmful for the environment and have
a detrimental impact on human health. Biological treatments have been shown to be a relevant option as
part of integrated technologies for the optimal removal of these toxic compounds. However, few studies
have addressed the mechanisms behind the cellular, genomic and proteomic processes, and there is limited
understanding of the dynamics of bacterial communities that are able to degrade DMPs. Such understanding
would facilitate the evaluation and validation of suitable tools for the treatment of coal-coke industry
effluents. It is known that the rhizosphere of Constructed Wetlands (CWs) is a suitable environment for
highly efficient transformations of complex contaminants, and that bacteria inhabiting this zone play an
essential role for xenobiotics removal. Therefore, this thesis focusses on the characterization of a strain
isolated from a CW which is able to degrade DMPs, and the assessment of the performance of lab-scale
CWs during the removal of DMP isomers.
