Abstract The energy transition in Germany (the „Energiewende”) has set goals to fight climate change, reduce energy imports, stimulate technology innovation and competitiveness, supply energy security and strengthen local economies over the last decades. Although significant improvements can be seen in the electricity sector, the transition in the heat sector is not moving forward with the demanded velocity and efficiency due to several reasons. One reason is the difficulty to take appropriate decisions in the heat sector for policy makers, as well as investors, being the sector characterized with high complexity, heterogeneity and uncertainty regarding its future development. Purpose of this work is to draw and describe future heat scenarios in Germany, and thus describe possible future developments, in order to support decision making. The scenario planning method was adopted and applied, and as result five scenarios have been developed based on the parameters biomass availability and greenhouse gas reduction goals. The scenarios will be implemented in a simulation model for Germany.
