Abstract | To start with, this article reviews two examples of past socio-economic transitions, which illustrate the difficulty of identifying causal relations and the relativity of normative judgments. Against this background, the challenges of conceptually framing the transformation towards sustainability are analyzed: First, conceptual frameworks should account for structural uncertainties – for instance, can a growth-based economy become sustainable? Second, objective normative criteria prove elusive – for instance, there is no unique temperature threshold separating sustainable and non-sustainable climate change. As a result, the article argues for discursive openness and explicit acknowledgment of normative tradeoffs. |
