Abstract As a result of urban runoff and wastewater discharges, important amounts of sediment have accumulated in the Cencali lagoon, located in the center of Villahermosa, Tabasco, Mexico. A bathymetry was performed in 50 points, and the accumulated volume of these solids was quantified in 31,550 m(3). Sediment and pollutant yields from urban runoff and wastewater discharges were also estimated by analyzing soil use and population density in the watershed. The lagoon receives around 7,000,000 m(3)/yr of water, 5,200 m(3)/yr of sediments, 105 t/yr of nitrogen, 26 t/yr of phosphorous, and 530 t/yr of DBO5, Sediment quality was assessed at 11 sampling stations by carrying out 742 individual chemical and microbiological analyses. According to the chemical and microbiological quality of the sediment and applying international ecological criteria of the aquatic life, the Cencali lagoon could be classified as more than 65% affected. Applying Mexican standards for the reuse of sludge, sediments from the Cencali lagoon can be applied on agricultural land and soil restoration. Another potential use could be as sealing layers in landfills
