Abstract Themobaric effects control the deep water renewal in deep lakes of the temperate zone. However, also in adjacent seas like the Baltic and the open ocean, deep water circulation is affected by thermobaric effects. In a numerical model, we demonstrate how deep water renewal happens in a horizontally homogeneous lake. We also provide field evidence from a very deep freshwater lake in Japan, Lake Shikotsu, that support the conclusions from the numerical model. In addition, we investigate the case of horizontal gradients to the deep water recirculation from theoretical considerations and field measurements from long Norwegian lakes (Myøsa, Tinnsjø, Tyrifjord, Hornindalsvatn, Breimsvatn) that demonstrate the effect of longitudinal gradients at the time of deep water formation.
