| Abstract | Woodlands and forests are important components of German landscapes. For that reason the structures and functions as well as the spatial configuration of woodlands and their history are important for studies in Regional Geography. Historical and recent human impacts in forests transform these ecosystems. Global change impacts are an important challenge for the functioning of forests and their services for human society. The workshop on "Landscapes of Germany" includes the main aspects of the role of forests in landscapes from an historical, ecological, economic and cultural point of view. The history of forest use and management together with recent management options to safeguard the main services of forests are discussed. Such a transdisciplinary approach is a prerequisite to understand the importance of forests in our landscapes. |
