| Abstract | The most recent workshop of the series "Werkstattgespräche" that was organized by the Scientific Advisory Board of the book series "Landschaften in Deutschland/Landscapes of Germany" in 2015 – was dedicated to forests and woodlands. By that, both were recognized for their central role in representing landscape characterizations in the literature. This article presents an introduction to forests and woodlands. It begins with a discussion of the legal basis for the protection of forests, followed by an analysis of the different functions of forests (natural resources, protection of nature and recreation). Finally, the various ways in which forests have affected and inspired our modern societies are explored. |
