Abstract | From surveying current product development trends of bio-based polymers it can be observed that design for recyclability sets priorities on developing bio-based thermosets for long lived products segments, which are disposed through waste-to-energy paths, whereas thermoplastic polymers are dropped into non-durable applications with high mechanical recycling quotas. For tracing the deficits of recyclability of bio-based plastics in natural environments and the circular economy prescriptive methods for the multi-sectoral context need to be established and for tracing product utilization options in future recycling chains the scope of predictive methods needs to be broadened. Therefore the aim of the proposed paper is to analyze the life cycle engineering trends for biopolymers and the constraints of the recycling infrastructure for plastic polymers from a systems perspective, and to give recommendations how cascade use indicators can be introduced into the agenda for R&D projects to promote product life cycle engineering in the bio-based economy towards meeting the circular economy goals. |
