Abstract | Environmental risk assessment is notoriously difficult. In assessing risks, we are dealing with the likelihood of events that – crucially – have not happened yet. Environmental risks are particularly challenging because of the complexity of the physical and ecological systems around us and the range of events that might happen. These include, for example, natural disasters, the spread of dangerous substances, and ecosystem changes leading to food and health security issues. Added to that, the constant emergence of new materials, new events and new knowledge makes it essential to update our understanding continually, to be able to identify threats that actually matter, as well as opportunities for timely action. |
