Abstract Within the European (FP7) project SECTOR, the further development of torrefaction-based technologies for the production of solid bioenergy carriers up to pilot-plant scale and beyond is assessed. The project consortium of more than 20 partners from industry and science support the market introduction of torrefaction-based bioenergy carriers as a commodity solid biofuel. The SECTOR project, which started in January 2012, is expected to shorten the time-to-market of torrefaction technology and to promote market introduction within stringent sustainability boundary conditions. The paper briefly introduces the project, its objectives and will then focus on the most important results that were obtained during the project so far. Up to 150 tons of torrefied biomass were produced and densified by the four producers. The production of these batches has led to the formulation of dedicated recipes for various feedstocks, through fundamental studies about changes in structure and composition during biomass torrefaction and densification. The torrefied pellets and briquettes have been tested by other project partners to assess the material performance during handling and storage as well as in small- and large-scale end-use applications. These results will be used to further improve the torrefied product quality in the second phase of the project. International standard test methods (ISO standards) for physical and chemical characterisation were successfully validated for torrefied pellets in an extensive Round Robin test, while new dedicated test methods and product standards are under development.
