Abstract In Germany several gas companies are prospecting for so-called unconventional natural gas reservoirs (shale gas and coal bed methane) in many parts of the country using the fracking technology (hydraulic fracturing). Therefore, a mixture of water, chemicals and sand is forced in the reservoir rock under high pressure in order to mobilize the enclosed gas. In Germany hydraulic fracturing is used in the natural gas production since approximately 50 years. For reservoirs with shale gas and coal bed methane, however, only a few practical experiences with this technology exist. To address the sometimes massive public concerns about the safety and the environmental compatibility of the fracking technology the “Dialogue and information dissemination process concerning the health and environmental aspects of hydrofracking” has been initiated. During the process recommendations have been developed by a panel of experts to promote a thoughtful, realistic and fact-based debate on the vices and virtues of hydrofracking.
