Abstract The rice terraces of Ifugao province (N-Luzon/Philippines) are several hundred years old. Rice has been
grown in a traditional way up eo now. That includes a synchronous growing period from December to July and
a fallow period from August to November under permanemly flooded rice fields and without agrochemicals.
Aim of ehe research in this system has been ehe analysis of ecological imeractions wichin ehe invercebraee fauna, mainly wich respect eo adapeations of potential pest organisms and their natural enemies eo ehe rice growing cycle. Because of increasing demand for rice, new varieties are grown and agrochemicals applied in some areas, enabling two crops per year. Thus, focus was also put on the effects of these changes on the eerrestrial archropod communicies. A synchronous rice free period, that also exists in the areas of modified rice production (however lasting only 1 eo 2 months) seems tobe the major limiting factor for buildup of pest populations. As long as the off-season remains synchronous, insect peses are no problem in either system.
