Abstract Investigating soil moisture in spatial and temporal scales is interesting in ecological, agricultural and
industrial contexts. An improvement of the determination of spatial distributed water content is in the
focus of this work. By measuring the propagation properties of electromagnetic waves along waveguides
the spatial distribution of the permittivity can be obtained. Due to some advantages, like increased
amount of data and better calibration a frequency domain approach is chosen here. In order to
investigate these advantages a proper waveguide is fabricated and tested. The complex s-parameters of
layered media are measured and compared with simple models.
