Abstract |
According to EU Directive 2001/18 both environmental risk assessment and monitoring of genetically modified plants have to be carried out for cultivation areas and neighbouring habitats and should be able to detect site-specific and / or regional differences. We present two methodologies complementing one another to determine the frequency and probability of typical and protected habitats and species in the vicinity (50 m, 200 m, 1000 m) of arable land in German agricultural landscapes. We analyse spatial map information of different types and scales in order to assess the potential exposure of habitats and species to GM cropping. We use two analytical approaches differing in methodology, geo-data used and scale applied. On large scales more generalised habitat and species information are analysed, while on small scales the more detailed variability and dynamics of cultivation systems and neighbouring habitats and species are integrated. |
