Abstract

The Kharaa catchment in Northern Mongolia was chosen as a model region for Central Asia in order to develop, implement and assess an Integrated Water Resources Management. A highly continental climate leads to a natural scarcity of water resources, a problem which may in the near future be intensified by the effects of climate and land use change. Economic and population growth lead to increasing water demand, water pollution and ultimately a destabilization of aquatic ecosystems and regional water cycles. At the same time, institutional structures have in the past not permitted to respond effectively to such complex challenges. An integrated strategy, consisting of an investigation of the scientific basis, implementation of technical solutions and a multilevel capacity development approach, is the key feature of the joint German-Mongolian research project presented here.
