Abstract We present a model to describe the simultaneous reactive transport in porous media of an arbitrary number of mobile and immobile species. The model includes the effects of advection, dispersion, sorption and degradation catalysed by microbial populations. The locally mass-conservative mixed hybrid finite element method (MHFEM) to discretize this system of coupled convection-diffusion-reaction equations and the algorithmic solution of the resulting nonlinear algebraic equations are described in detail. Further, new ideas regarding the discretization of the convective term are discussed. Finally a comparative numerical study (MHFEM versus conforming FEM) is presented.
