Abstract This article presents a computer-based method of modelling water quality. The simulations were carried out by use of WASP5, using a quasi-2D approach permitting the spatial presentation of water spread and sediment transport. The results of the hydrodynamic simulation (DYNHYD) formed the basis for modeling quality (EUTRO). The principal aim of this study was to determine the degree of complexity needed to permit satisfactory simulation of dissolved oxygen. At first, simulations were run using periods of mean flow; then, the flood of August 2002 was included in the study. In addition to comparing mean-flow and flood-flow conditions in the river, water quality was modelled for a polder system. Finally, using a Monte-Carlo simulation, we determined which model parameters responded and how sensitively they did so.
