Abstract
A pragmatic, methodological framework for scale appropriate analysis, assessment and management of the landscape water and matter dynamics in administrative units and river basins is developed in this study. In relation to the chosen scale definition a hierarchical procedure to select appropriate methods, models and data is carried out that describe water and biogeochemical fluxes accordingly. A focus of the study is on integrated ecological-economic assessment of the impact of land use and land management changes on the landscape water and matter dynamics. The results are used for the formulation of recommendations for ground and river water and soil protection in land use and river basin management (identification of measures, decision support). The presented examples confirm the hypotheses of the study, and show the successful application of the pragmatic-methodological framework (the examples include both the defined scale levels and the selected and developed model concepts).
