Abstract In recent years, the European wood pellet market has seen a significant growth and production capacities have been expanded continuously. In view of a further expansion of pellet production considerable potentials by the year 2020 could be identified. When it comes to allocating biomass potentials as input flows for pellet production, itemized according to the quality standard prEN 14961-2 for use in appropriate target markets, above all, significant potentials could be pointed out for the production of wood pellets quality class B (suitable for use in medium and large scale boilers). In the long term, the major biomass potential for future pellet production lies in the cultivation of energy crops (SRC) and the use of logging residues. With regard to the further expansion of pellet production sustainability requirements for the energy supply with pellets and utilization rivalries will increasingly come to the fore in future exploitation of pellet potentials. It is only by means of international certification systems along the whole bioenergy production chain that a constant pellet quality up to the customer can be ensured. Currently, there are no sustainability requirements for the production and the energetic use of biomass pellets.
