Abstract This chapter attempts to show how the mycelia of filamentous fungi can act as transport vectors for contaminants and contaminant-degrading bacteria and hence influence the biodegradation of (hydrophobic) organic chemicals in the subsurface. It establishes a conceptual framework of the influence of fungus-mediated transport processes on the bioaccessibility of subsurface-contaminants and discusses them as interplay between microbial ecology and physical constraints.
