Abstract Bacteria occur as dynamic and diverse populations and communities in nature. To understand bacterial ecology in natural environments, new techniques are required for answering questions which could not be addressed by traditional methods alone. Now, more than ever, flow cytometric analysis and cell sorting of sub-populations and sub-communities,?especially of ones not yet culturable, have been recognized as valuable tools for microbiologists that provide unique opportunities to investigate and quantify various aspects of micro-environmental processes by combining them with the Omics technologies.
