Abstract Jordan has a hot and arid climate and one of the lowest rates of water availability per capita in the world. Due to water scarcity and inadequate levels of wastewater treatment in rural and peri-urban areas there is a large need for development of sustainable decentralised treatment systems (DTSs) that enhance opportunities for effluent reuse in a simple, affordable and low-maintenance way. In order to protect groundwater and public health, irrigation reuse schemes must satisfy strict standards with respect to nitrogen and E. coli in Jordan. The aim of this study was to develop appropriate DTSs suitable for the climate conditions and effluent reuse standards in Jordan using ecotechnologies (down flow wetlands and sand filters). Two ecotechnology based systems were commissioned in July 2009 at a DTS demonstration and research facility at Fuhais near Amman. "System 1" consists of a two chamber septic tank and a recirculating down flow (DF) filter (20 m2). Three quarters of the effluent from the DF filter is returned to the second chamber of the septic tank, while the remaining Πleaves the system as effluent. Under a hydraulic load of 125 mm/day (ca. 25 p.e.), System 1 has consistently produced an effluent with BOD5, TSS, NO3-N and E.coli concentrations of < 30 mg/L, < 20 mg/L, 30 mg/L and < 1x105 MPN/100mL respectively. "System 2" is a multi-stage single-pass system consisting of a septic tank followed in series by a 40 m2 DF filter (secondary treatment and nitrification), a denitrification reactor filled with wood-shavings and a final 57 m2 DF wetland (polishing and pathogen reduction). At a hydraulic load of 100 mm/day per DF stage (ca. 40 p.e.) System 2 produced an effluent with BOD5, TSS, NO3-N and E.coli concentrations of < 25 mg/L, 20 mg/L, < 35 mg/L and < 1000 MPN/100mL respectively. Further design optimisation is needed for both systems to ensure that the highest category of Jordanian effluent reuse standards for nitrogen and E. coli are consistently satisfied.
