Abstract Soil organic matter (SOM) can be subdivided into two fractions. an inert carbon fraction (Cinert) and a decomposable carbon fraction (Cdecomp). Only a part of SOM will be affected by management systems. This part has a great influence on all transformation processes of substances in soil (nutrients and pollutants). A fractionation using the simple parameter of hot water extractable carbon (Chwe) can be used to estimate the level of the decomposable part of SOM. This parameter correlates with soil biological parameters such as carbon dioxide exhalation or nitrate production under incubation conditions. Using more than 1000 soil samples of long-term experiments from agricultural farms in Germany, ranges of Chwe could be recommended for a classification of soils on their supply of decomposable organic matter. For arable soils a lower limit for the supply of decomposable SOM was <20 mg Chwe/100g soil dm. A content much more than 40 mg Chwe/100g soil dm could be too high and may cause pollution.
