Abstract | Tropical tree crops are produced either in commercial plantations or by smallholders. In this article, a methodology for assessing the sustainability of peasant cocoa production in West Africa is outlined. We propose a procedure for testing the hypothesis that shaded and less intensively managed cacao plantings are more sustainable than unshaded, more intensive plantations. The approach is based on ecological, economic and social indicators for sustainability and takes into account the requirements of experimental design to allow for statistical evaluation. |
