Abstract Land use on flood plain soils of the Elbe River? The flood plain soils of the Elbe River are contaminated with harmful substances. The flood plains are often used in agriculture as pastures. Pollutants transported and distributed by floods from the flood channel can be introduced into the food web. Investigations were carried out to study transport and distribution mechanisms of contaminants. Soil hydrological measurement places, which consists of suction cups, tensiometers and TDR-probes installed in different depths, were used for the investigations. Increased cadmium contents of the plant tissue growing up on the flood plain were observed. The soil moisture content of the flood plain soils was strongly influenced by the water level of the Elbe River. Beside the input during flood events, a transportation of harmful substances via the ground water pathway can not be excluded. The investigations showed also the importance of model (lysimeter) investigation to study the transport mechanisms when the soil redox regime changes from oxidation to reduction, which is impossible in situ during the floods.
