Abstract | In August 1999 an expedition with the research vessel RV"ALBIS" has been carried out along the River Saale, starting from the town Bad Kösen downstream to the completive mixing of the River Saale into the River Elbe, approximately 110 km after confluence near the town Tangermünde. Scope of this study was the investigation of the planktological and eco - microbiological state of both rivers. Results of conductivity, inorganic nutrients, suspended particulate matter (SPM), particle size distribution of SPM, particulate organic carbon (POC), particulate organic nitrogen (PON), abundance of viruses and bacteria, exoenzymatic selfpurification, and productivity of bacterioplankton and phytoplankton are presented. Compared to the River Elbe higher concentrations of salt (conductivity), nutrients, and viruses as well as exoenzymatic hydrolysis rates for chitin were estimated for the River Saale, whereas SPM, the number of particles > 20 µm of the SPM, POC, PON, the enzymatic degradation rates of arginine - rich proteins and primary production rates reached distinct higher values in the River Elbe. Only small differences between both rivers were determined for abundance and biomass of bacteria and for bacterial production rates. Despite the high and comparable eutrophication situation in both rivers, the River Saale showed a lower biologically secondary pollution, conditional on unduly phytoplankton production. Although River Saale and Elbe showed distinct exoenzymatic hydrolysis rates, overall a comparable microbial selfpurification potential was calculated. |
