Abstract Urban nature conservation is currently in a critical situation. There is an urgent need of anthropogenic-utilitaristic arguments for nature conservation in cities instead of only pure ethical and biological reasons as rarity and naturalness. In this sense the theory of urban nature conservation needs a change of paradigms. But the acceptance of different kinds of urban nature - from well maintained green to urban wildlife areas and derelict land - by specific inhabitant groups is still mostly unknown. This must be cleared up by empirical studies. The investigation of utilization and acceptance of different urban green in two residential estates with urban wildlife areas nearby shows that in spite of high acceptance of urban green in general the utilization and acceptance of urban wildlife areas is very low. The existing potential is still currently not used. The still open question is: How can people in cities be stimulated to use all kinds of urban nature more effective without damaging them?
