Abstract | Fungal pathogens such as ascomycete Venturia inaequalis, the pathogenic agent of apple scab, cause severe damage to apple trees (Malus domestica Borkh.). The potential use of enzymes with cell wall degrading capacities such as chitinases, ß-1,3-glucanases, and cellulases from mycoparasitic Trichoderma ssp. to control fungal plant pathogens has been investigated. Several studies showed an increase of resistance of apple cultivars against Venturia inaequalis by the insertion of genes encoding chitinase from biocontrol fungus Trichoderma atroviride (T. harzianum). Our study is focused on the effect of constitutive expressed T. atroviride genes encoding exochitinase nag70 and endochitinase ech42 in transgenic apple lines, which lead to increased resistance to fungal pathogens, on non-target organisms as mycorrhizal fungi. Therefore we cultivated plants of the apple cv. ‘Pinova’ and plants of two transgenic ‘Pinova’ lines (T386 and T389) in a sand-vermiculite substrate and inoculated them with the AMF Glomus intraradices and G. mosseae. After four months of growth both transgenic lines showed significantly reduced root colonization rates. |
