Abstract Paleolimnological data on the trophic evolution of the Rocha Lagoon indicate a negative relationship between the trophic degree and sea level. Maxima of organic matter, total abundance of diatoms and sponge spicules were registered during regression events, most probably due to an increase of runoff processes from the catchment area. The identified regression and transgression events are in close agreement with the regional model of sea level variation (MARTIN & SUGUIO, 1992), except for the last 2500 Y.B.P. The model proposes a constant regression after approximately 2500 Y.B.P. We found evidence that a small transgression might have taken place in the late Holocene.
