Abstract Fen soil cultivation in north-east Germany resulted in sufficiently severe peat degradation for the introduction of schemes to restore such degraded sites by re-wetting. However, little is known about the impact of these restoration schemes on the nutrient dynamics in soil and water. We investigated the effects of changes in land use and rising of the groundwater table on nitrogen, phosphorus, and carbon in soil solution, groundwater and surface water at six sites with variable land use and management in a case study in the "Droemling" fen area. The re-wetting of Histosols contributed to a decrease of total inorganic nitrogen and an increase in phosphorus content in soil solution, groundwater and surface water due to decrease redox potential. High groundwater table will result in an increase of dissolved organic carbon concentration in groundwater. The site specific management of the water table is of crucial importance for preventing increased solubilisation and transport of soil P from site and therefore to diminish an accelerated eutrophication and deterioration of water quality.
