Abstract Socioeconomic data required for the WFD implementation are often collected for spatial units
which are not readily compatible with hydrological units such as river basins and subbasins. The data
are often available for statistical and/or administrative units such as local authorities, districts, federal
states or the national level. Other data are collected primarily for different spatial units such as water
supply districts, wastewater disposal districts, areas of high population concentrations, etc. This data
has to be adapted to hydrological spatial units such as river basin districts or even more detailed water
subbasin (survey) areas to comply with requirements regarding the economic analysis of water uses
and the development of baseline scenarios. In this paper we investigate uncertainty resulting from such
data transformation. We address especially (i) uncertainty due to boundary imprecision of the
hydrological and socioeconomic data units; (ii) uncertainty resulting from using data aggregated to
larger spatial units; and (iii) uncertainty due to the integration of data collected for different spatial
units and using different methodologies/models.
