Abstract | This paper shows results of an ecological study raccoon (Procyon lotor L.) population in Anhalt (Germany). The analyses of around 2700 questionnaires and of a literature research show the increased on range of Procyon lotor since the last 30 years. Centres of its current distribution range in Saxonia-Anhalt are area around the Harz mountains, in the South and in the North-east Gaps in the distribution are the regions of the Elbe river and in the Northwest. Furthermore there are several results presented an the sections of 56 raccoon carcasses from Wernigerode (Harz). The age of these raccoons was determined be general skull development and by configuration of incremental cementum lines. Reproductive evidences were examined in 31 females by counting the placental scars. The raccoon population in Wernigerode seems to be stable and fertile. The mean potential litter size (placental scars) was 3.92 juveniles per female (n = 13). The percentage of reproductive female yearlings (in the second year of life) 12% lower than 89 % of all older females. The stomach analyses show the food habits of an omnivorous animal. The data represent the diet of the summer and autumn, which contains fruits, insects, some vertebrates but human refuse too. The infestation rate with the raccoon roundworm Baylisascaris procyonis was 39%, which are the first published data for this area. Due to the problem of zoonotic infections by it B. procyonis and the strong implications of increasing urbanisation of the raccoon, there is an enormous backlog demand of information and explanation among the public. Chaetopsylla trichosa, a further flea species was added to the spectrum of "German raccoon ectoparasites". |
