| Abstract | The invention of passenger cars 140 years ago marked a turning point with respect to individual transport in modern societies. While driving tire and road wear particles (TRWP) are emitted, up to 1.33 million tons in the EU. Therefore, the EU adopted the new Euro 7 standard, regulating TWP from 1st July 2028 onwards within the Regulation (EU) 2024/1257 framework. On the roads, TRWP can be mobilized by rain: Up to 30 % reach surface waters, mainly in urban areas. Apart from ecotoxicological concerns, TRWP can act as a carrier for other pollutants dissolved i. e. in river water like heavy metals. This dissertation’s aim is, to investigate the interaction between heavy metals and TRWP. The focus is on the importance of heavy metal adsorption for water quality, the characterization of binding properties and bioavailability of the bound metals, and the influence of environmental factors such as salinity and dissolved organic carbon (DOC) on this interaction. Different types of TRWP samples were used in order to cover a broad spectrum of different conditions (e. g. from streets, highway tunnels, kart lanes). River water samples were selected representing natural and anthropogenic influenced systems. The adsorption of heavy metals like Cr, Ni, Zn, Cd and Pb to TRWP can lead to a deterioration of the chemical water quality with respect to suspended matter. Environmental factors like salinity and DOC concentrations have a high observed impact mainly on Cd and Zn: their adsorption is hindered by increased salinity or DOC. Analyzing the binding strength and bioavailability of the investigated heavy metals, the following order was received: Zn > Pb > Cd >> Cu >> As > Ni > Cr. In summary, TRWP plays an important role in the riverine transport of heavy metals. The interactions between particles, heavy metals, and environmental conditions can have a lasting impact on water quality and should therefore be given greater consideration in environmental assessments and regulations. |
