Abstract This study investigated the colonization of plant roots by arbuscular mycorrhizal fungi (AMF) on green roofs in the cities of Leipzig and Halle (Saale). The aim was to analyze the influence of green roof type, building height, roof age, and substrate and vegetation characteristics on mycorrhizal frequency (F [%]), mycorrhization intensity (M [%]), and arbuscular abundance (A [%]). A total of 158 plant samples were taken from 20 green roofs and evaluated microscopically.

The results show that the functional group of plants had the strongest influence on mycorrhizal colonization. Crassulaceae (especially succulents) exhibited by far the lowest mycorrhization values, while legumes (Fabaceae), grasses (Poaceae), and herbaceous species reached significantly higher frequencies and intensities. Among the abiotic factors, substrate depth proved to be a key predictor, as both the frequency and intensity of mycorrhization increased with increasing substrate depth. The type of vegetation showed a positive effect, whereas building height and roof age showed no significant effects.

This study demonstrates that mycorrhizal colonization on green roofs is not uniform but is shaped by the
interplay of vegetation composition and site conditions. The findings provide practical insights, suggesting that targeted species selection and sufficient substrate depth are crucial for promoting the establishment of mycorrhizal symbioses and thereby enhancing the ecological performance of green roofs. At the same time, this work opens up avenues for further research, such as long-term observations or the investigation and promotion of the entire microbial community to improve the resilience of urban vegetation systems.
