Abstract

As anthropogenic climate change progresses, the implementation of carbon dioxide removal (CDR) is being debated more frequently. This research aims to shed light on preferences for ecosystem service provision associated with agricultural CDR measures, using deliberative choice experiments with a sample of 117 German citizens. It is one of the first studies transferring deliberative monetary valuation to the online format and valuing ecosystem services in the context of agricultural CDR and rewetting. Our findings indicate that habitat for biodiversity is potentially the most highly valued ecosystem service among those evaluated. Additionally, participants considered flood protection, climate regulation and water quality to be important, while preferences for soil erosion were lower. Furthermore, individuals expressed a higher willingness to pay after being confronted with information on the potential risk of mitigation deterrence, although the underlying mechanism remains unclear.
