| Abstract | Citizen science, sometimes also referred to as "community science" or "participatory science", is an increasingly important instrument for urban nature planning, supporting both inclusive governance and evidence-based decision-making. This guidance document demonstrates how citizen science can be systematically integrated throughout the Urban Nature Plan cycle. This spans from co-creation and identification of needs through data generation, communication of outcomes and long-term monitoring to adaptive management and an open dialogue on urban nature. The guide provides practical, step-by-step support for both experienced organisations seeking to improve existing approaches and newcomers initiating their first citizen science projects, with the aim of strengthening urban biodiversity outcomes and community engagement. Key steps for establishment are: • Defining audience and aims • Choosing one or more taxonomic groups and assessing for existing programs • Assessing who are the key partners to lead and who should cooperate • Securing budget for coordination • Clarifying IT issues • Preparing materials and timeplans • Recruitment, training and support - community management to ensure participation and ensuring high quality data • Giving and taking feedback for improvement and expansion |
